Editorial Positions

Weekender Staff Member

About the Position

The Weekender is the Daily Cal’s online culture magazine, looking at the Berkeley community and Bay Area through in-depth reporting, commentary and other forms of writing and art. The Weekender is rather flexible and we publish once a week on Sundays, so if you want to grow as a writer and/or artist, this is the perfect department for you.

We’re looking for staff members who want to write/draw in a variety of different styles. These include features, interviews, cultural commentary, fiction and personal essays, creative writing and cartoons/comics. No prior experience necessary – all you need is passion and a sense of creativity.

Application Materials

  • Cover letter
  • Two writing/art samples (unpublished or¬†published) that showcase your skills. In terms of the word count for the writing samples, there’s no rough minimum or maximum (a poem could be just three words long, but a feature could be 1000 words long)
  • Short answer response to the following question:
    • Why are you interested in joining the Weekender?
  • Individual interview (Invitation Only)

Work Requirements

  • One piece per week¬†(expect to be in the office about 1-3 hours per week, but how much time you spend working on your piece is ultimately up to you)
  • Biweekly Weekender staff meeting

Leadership Opportunities

  • After serving as a writer, contributors may apply to be Weekender editors.
