Graphic Artist

About the Position

Talented graphic artists help to engage readers with compelling visual content that accompanies and helps synthesize our news stories.

Our graphic artists compose creative and attention-grabbing infographics that are aesthetically appealing, inventive and informative while very quickly building their portfolios. Graphic artists must be willing to design and revise pieces once per week on short timelines to produce graphics displaying statistics and detailed information in a variety of engaging styles. Good graphic artists are thoughtful and creative and have a good sense of color and composition. Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, or Adobe Photoshop is required, and any knowledge of additional design programs or making interactive graphics is a plus.

  • Two or three sample graphics (PDFs)
  • Interview (invitation only)
  • Design test (invitation only)

Work Requirements

  • One graphic per week
  • Attend biweekly design meetings
    • Reduced workload option: The Daily Cal understands that some applicants may have disabilities and/ or extenuating circumstances that would prevent them from working a full workload, such as a necessary, paying job that takes up a significant amount of time outside of classes. If this is the case, applicants may choose to apply for a reduced workload position.

Leadership Opportunities

After serving as a graphic artist, a staffer may go on to become a deputy design editor, head of illustrations and infographics, or the design editor.
