Editorial Positions

Opinion Columnist

About the Position

As a weekly columnist, you will share your wit, humor and valuable insights to entertain and inform.

Tuesday is home of the Sex on Tuesday column, but the other days of the week are open for fresh and thought-provoking discussions on any topic through personal narrative and experience. Applicants from all backgrounds, perspectives and fields of interest are encouraged to apply. If you are interested in writing on your experience as a person of color at UC Berkeley, please consider applying for the recurring Cal in Color column. Opinion applicants should outline possible themes or overarching topics in their application.

Application Materials

  • Resume (PDF, optional)
  • Cover letter (PDF, include four column pitches related to same overarching theme)
  • One original sample writing piece between 700 and 900 words. We recommend that this is column or personal narrative (PDF)
  • One critique of a previously published Daily Cal opinion column (PDF)
  • Interview (invitation only)

Work Requirements

  • One column per week
  • One editing session per week
  • Weekly opinion staff meeting
    • Reduced workload option: The Daily Cal understands that some applicants may have disabilities and/ or extenuating circumstances that would prevent them from working a full workload, such as a necessary, paying job that takes up a significant amount of time outside of classes. If this is the case, applicants may choose to apply for a reduced workload position.

Leadership Opportunities

After serving as an opinion columnist, a staffer may go on to become the deputy opinion editor or the opinion editor.
