Editorial Positions


About the Position

As a staff photographer for The Daily Californian, you will get a chance to attend and photograph events on campus and around the city of Berkeley (including concerts, sports events, and breaking news events), as well as have the opportunity to publish full-page photo essays in print and online.

The photo staff covers all of the photo needs for the Daily Cal. Photographers should have a strong background in digital photography and photo editing; they should know how to use and be comfortable with a DSLR camera, and it is recommended that they are knowledgeable in programs such as Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. Photographers should be detail-oriented and quick to produce content.

  • 4-6 photos that display a range of experience
  • Interview (invitation only)

Work Requirements

  • Two to three 4-hour “on call” time slot per week for assignments, plus additional weekend opportunities to shoot special events if available
  • Weekly photo staff meeting

Leadership Opportunities

  • After serving as a photographer, a staffer may go on to become a deputy photo editor or the photo editor.
