Cover letter, resume, two sports-related pieces or other writing samples.

Writing recaps, previews and one feature on an athlete per semester. Weekly sports staff meeting.
Sports reporters continue to advance to cover more coveted sports each semester that they are on staff. Staff members may apply to serve as the assistant sports editor or sports editor.

As a sports reporter, you will be tasked with covering one of Cal’s varsity sports teams. You are the go-to person for a particular sport and will have the chance to interview both coaches and players. Reporters in the sports department receive press passes to events and have the opportunity to develop relationships with the campus’s athletes — some of whom have gone on to become Olympic gold medalists (Missy Franklin, Nathan Adrian and Alex Morgan, to name a few) and/or professional sports champions (such as Aaron Rodgers, Marshawn Lynch and Jason Kidd). The job requires curiosity and a love of sports above all else, but it also requires dedication and a strong writing ability. Previous sports writing experience is recommended but is not required.
